Downhill skiing becomes part of the Olympic program for the first time. The debut of this kind of sports at the Olympics was full of curious incidents. Skiing trainers were not allowed to take part in the competitions in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which caused Austria and Switzerland to withdraw their athletes from the men’s tournament. At the same time, Turkey, which participated in the Winter Olympics for the first time, was represented by a team of six skiers. With 4:47.4, the downhill tournament was won by the Olympic ski jumping champion Birger Ruud, who worked as a shop assistant at a sports boutique in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
